Message From Fiona Harnett Outgoing Board Chair

I have taken some time over the last few weeks to reflect on the wonderful opportunities that Guiding offers.  One of the highlights I’ve had as Board Chair has been the opportunity to read each Queen’s Guide recipients letter.  In the last set of letters was one from a ranger who talked about how her journey to date in Guiding had seen her transform from an anxious and shy girl into a capable and confident young woman.  It reminded me of my journey through Guiding as a girl and how the organisation shaped who I am today.

There is something very special and magical about what we do and how we change the lives of girls and young women.  I’ve always believed that the secret formula to our success is the hard working and dedicated volunteers that tirelessly make this magic happen.

It has been my privilege and honour to chair the Board and help shape the direction of the organisation over the last 5.5 years.  Thank you for supporting me on this journey and making the ideas we’ve had become reality on the ground.

The focus has been on how we can allow more girls to experience the special opportunities Guiding offers and I’ve delighted in seeing the growth in Discoveries, the launch of GirlPowered NZ and Explore and the changes that have happened with section programmes.

The last two years have been a challenging time for us all, personally, professionally and as volunteers.  The creative and supportive way we’ve held Guiding together has been inspiring to me, and I would like to thank you all for the work you do in Guiding.

I wish everyone the best as we look to return as much as possible to face to face activities.  I’m looking forward to continuing to support Guiding as a WAGGGS National Trainer and to connect with you virtually or at face to face trainings during 2022 and beyond.
