What we do

Balancing physical, mental & social development

Our programmes feature a significant emphasis on outdoor activities and teamwork. There is a focus on girl leadership and responsibility for self and others, enabling ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things.

Programmes appropriate to different age groups provide regular opportunities for participation and fun in recreation, learning for leisure, and life skills. Activities offer numerous areas of choice, challenge, achievement and new experiences, especially in the outdoors. Members are encouraged to involve themselves in community service and to participate in international opportunities.

Some of our programmes experiences

Outdoor

As part of GirlGuiding NZ all girls have the opportunity to experience fun outdoor activities and camps, and work towards badges and certificates that teach them outdoor skills.

Sport & Recreation

Sport NZ research has highlighted the importance of the fun and social aspect for girls as being key to taking part in activities. We provide girls with a safe place to participate in a wide range of active recreation opportunities and challenge themselves.

Girl-Led Research

To provide the best possible programmes for girls it’s important to understand what today’s girls need. Every two years we engage an independent market research company to find out What Matters to Kiwi Girls!

Advocacy

We encourage girls and leaders to make a personal and positive commitment to change the world around them for the better. To stand up for issues they believe in and to build a better world.

At GirlGuiding NZ
our philosophy is girl-led

This means that we offer every girl the opportunity to decide and take charge of her Guiding journey. We empower her to learn new skills, develop confidence, build relationships, and so much more. We believe in girl-led because providing these opportunities for her now enables her to take action to change her world in the future.

Global Initiatives

GirlGuiding New Zealand is one of 150 member countries of the World Association of GirlGuiding and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). This relationship gives us access to global initiatives like Free Being Me - a programme delivered as a partnership between Dove's Self Esteem Project and WAGGGS. Similarly, SurfSmart is a programme made available by a partnership through internet security giant, Symantec and WAGGGS.

Free Being Me

Free Being Me is an innovative, fun and interactive global programme for 7-14 year olds to learn that body confidence and self-esteem come from valuing their bodies, standing up to social pressures and supporting others to be body confident.

Surf Smart

Surf Smart is a non-formal education curriculum designed to inform young people about how to connect positively online, protect themselves from online threats and respect their rights and reputation on the internet.

International

One of the fantastic benefits of being a member of GirlGuiding is the opportunity for international travel for both girls and volunteers.
