Our girls LOVE the outdoors! To equip them with the right skills so they can safely enjoy their outdoor adventures, we provide training and leadership opportunities where they get first-hand experience in a variety of situations, all while meeting other like-minded girls.
To kick-off Get Outdoors Week (16 – 24 November) – an annual campaign led by the Mountain Safety Council (MSC) to encourage people to embrace the amazing countryside that New Zealand has to offer and get active – we thought we’d share one of the awesome experiences that some of our girl members recently got to participate in – the ATL@S (Advanced Training of Leadership at Sea) Voyage!
Back in September, some of our members, alongside Scouts and Venturers aged 14-16 years old, went on a five-day voyage designed to let them experience life on the sea, and explore new challenges of leadership, teamwork and personal development. This ATL@S Voyage was run in conjunction with the Spirit of Adventure Trust.
“Thank you for the amazing opportunity to go on the Spirit of New Zealand! It was awesome to spend it with Guides and Scouts from all over New Zealand. The classes on communication and personality types were interesting and informative. I realized I am a mover and that is good to know.” – Serena
“It was great! An interesting challenge that I really enjoyed. It was well worth attending. It’s given me confidence participating in the adventure of it all. It was great to meet a bunch of random people from around NZ and has given me more hands-on sailing experience. When can I go again…?” – Olivia
Guides get access to a lot of amazing opportunities like this – if you’d like to have the opportunity to embark on adventures like these, click here to find out more about joining GirlGuiding NZ.
Taking on a new outdoor challenge like sailing can be beneficial mentally, emotionally and physically, but if that seems too adventurous, you can still participate in Get Outdoors Week (GO Week).
GO Week is a great opportunity to make a concerted effort to get outdoors. There are a range of events already happening around the county that you can join – check them out here. GO Week isn’t about climbing mountains or tramping hills – it can be as easy as going for a walk outdoors with the family. And as if enjoying the beauty of Aotearoa isn’t incentive enough to get outside, there are chances to win fabulous prizes as individuals, families and groups.
Put your sunblock and trainers on, grab a buddy, and Get Outdoors this November!
