GIRLS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!

Did you know that only 8% of plastic ever made gets recycled?

We didn’t! But thanks to Brianne West, CEO and Co-founder of Ethique Beauty, our Community Programme participants (non-Guiding members who get to experience some of our awesome activities – find out how you can participate here!) had a fun-packed afternoon learning about the environment with Brianne and her mum while making their own lip-balms and ice-cream.

Connecting with others and with their world is one of the foundations of our Educational Method, and it’s behind all Girl Guide and Girl Scout movements all over the world! With this mindset, girls learn to be active citizens, get their hands dirty, enjoy the outdoors, value others, pay attention to the wider world, and make a difference by speaking out for change. A commitment to care about the environment is embedded into our Programme for each section (Pippins, Brownies, Guides and Rangers) through age-appropriate, fun activities and challenges that our volunteers help girls with. We challenge girls to stand-up for what they believe in and take action to change what they believe should be changed.

For example, earlier this year, Guides and Brownies in Picton participated in the Midwinter Swim to raise awareness on the importance of keeping our oceans clean. They were even interviewed by their local More FM Radio station!

Our Rangers in Morrinsville created gift boxes to offer girls staying in the Te Whakaruruhau Women’s Refuge, so that they would have some basic items that all girls need, and also know that someone cared about them.

These are just two examples of how our girls advocate for awesome causes around New Zealand.
