We are excited to bring to you our best-ever Science event for girls! Science enthusiasts from 10-17 years will come together for a five day event that brings together Science, Technology, Engineering Mathematics in a way that will excite young minds and provide an incredible adventure at the end of the summer holidays.
With multiple events for girls to enjoy, this event is a budding scientist’s dream.
Take your robotics skills to the next level! We will be crafting a series of challenging missions; join a team to unleash a walking, musical robot and programme the robot to complete these missions. We will provide the support, equipment, and of course, the challenges! No experience with programming or robotics necessary.
ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS
Gain a greater understanding of engineering and how it impacts the everyday lives of people. Become more aware of the social issues that impact development in communities and learn about the value of water and the process required to treat it. … AND have fun while you build and test your own fully functioning water filter!
HOW DO COMPUTERS THINK?
Ever wondered how a computer thinks? At MagnifiScience we’ll create our very own sorting, organising and creating machine – no electricity required! We’ll be looking at how algorithms and data science can help us make sense of things in a way that’s easy to understand and beautiful.
CHEMISTRY – THE CENTRAL SCIENCE
At MagnifiScience we’ll explore all the wonderful things you can do with the chemicals around you! From making soap to investigating the properties of dry ice, we will learn about the properties of everyday things, and gain an understanding that chemistry is everywhere and it is AMAZING!
MARINE LAB DISCOVERY CENTRE
Enjoy a day of marine discovery at University of Auckland’s Leigh Marine Lab Discovery Centre. Complete a rocky shore species count, a foreshore bush walk and then get up close and personal with a touch tank & discovery centre marine education programme.
THE POWER OF MATHEMATICS
Is it possible to build a tower out of business cards? What about one that technically has no inside? Can you figure out how to cut out any shape possible with only one cut? We’ll answer all these questions and more – with only the power of mathematics and paper!
WOMEN IN ENGINEERING
Discover your inner Engineer as you spend a morning doing hands-on problem-solving activities with the Women in Engineering Network. See what an Engineering lab looks like, and learn about the many and diverse types of Engineering
Criteria and How to Apply:
- Girls must be current Guiding members aged 10-17 years.
- Minimum camping experience of 2 nights at a guide camp and the recommendation of their leader.
- Attendees will be chosen on a first-in first-served basis combined with meeting the above criteria and getting a balance of ages.
