Tararua Tramp Discovery

You’re invited to the Tararua Tramp Discovery event for older Guides & Rangers! 

(Please note there is a minimum age requirement of 12 years old or in Year 8 to attend this Discovery, please don’t accept the invite if your child is younger than this as she will be removed)

Tararua Tramp is a three-day Discovery event where girls have the opportunity to tramp the beautiful Tararuas. Extend your tramping experience and make new friends all while seeing some of the beautiful scenery the Tararuas has to offer.

You will be staying at Holdsworth Lodge for the Friday and Saturday night, on Saturday you will do a 4 hour day walk and then on the Sunday we will tramp up to Powell Hut (4 hours) and stay there on Sunday night. On Monday we will tramp back out to the carpark (also 4 hours).


  • Fee: $250 Due by 9 December 2022.
  • Location: Holdsworth Lodge, Mount Holdsworth Road, Clareville 5791​
  • Date and times: 3 February 2023 (drop-off at 6 PM) – 6 February 2023 (pick-up at 3 PM)


Places are limited and these often fill up incredibly quickly, we recommend accepting the invite as soon as possible. Please ensure you read the attachment in OGM which is the kitlist of what you will need to take for the weekend. Please only accept this invite if you feel your child will be up to three days of tramping – approx. 4 hours each day, this Discovery will require some level of skill and fitness and is ideal for someone who has tramping experience – it isn’t suitable as a first ever tramp. Please do not accept the invite if your child won’t be comfortable being away from you for three days.


– When does the fee need to be paid by and what happens if I don’t pay it by this date? This is due by 9 December 2022. If it isn’t paid by this date, your child will be withdrawn from this event and her place will be given to a girl on the waitlist.

– What happens if my child becomes unwell while on the trampA leader will drive out to where there is cell reception and phone you to come and collect. You will need to be prepared to potentially collect at short notice.

– Is travel to and from the venue arranged for me? No, all travel to and from the venue is to be arranged by parents/caregivers. You will need to ensure you arrange to drop-off and pick-up your child yourself from Holdsworth Lodge Car park at the times stipulated above as this isn’t something that GirlGuiding NZ organise as a part of this event. 

– What does the fee cover? This fee covers all associated tramping costs, food and accommodation

– Can parents/caregivers come along? No, this event is strictly for girls and leaders. There is no capacity for parents/caregivers to come along as well.
